Artura: Coupé or Spider?
The same hybrid supercar idea, with two distinct ways to enjoy the journey.
The story in brief
- Two body styles: Coupé has a fixed roof; Spider adds an electrically retractable hardtop.
- A shared foundation: the 700 PS high-performance hybrid combines a twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor.
- Spider’s signature detail: its hardtop operates in 11 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph.
A personal choice
Which Artura experience appeals to you?
Choosing an Artura Coupé or Artura Spider is about more than deciding whether you want a roof that opens. Both share McLaren’s compact high-performance hybrid layout and a cabin designed around the driver, but the body styles offer a different way to enjoy the same road.
The Coupé’s fixed roof keeps the shape clean and purposeful. The Spider lets you open the cabin to the surroundings, with a retractable hardtop that turns a change in the weather into a change in the driving experience.
Both appear in the current Grange McLaren supercar range. If you are deciding between them, start with how you will use the car: regular drives, weekend trips, touring and the occasions when you would choose to lower the roof.
Open-air driving
How the Artura Spider roof works
McLaren states that the Spider’s retractable hardtop operates in 11 seconds, at speeds of up to 31 mph. The powered rear window can also be raised or lowered, helping you tailor the cabin experience whether the roof is open or closed.
An optional electrochromic glass roof panel offers another choice: it changes the light entering the cabin at the touch of a control. Ask the team to confirm whether this option is included on the car you are viewing.
During an appointment, try the controls and look at the car with the roof in both positions. Check sightlines, entry and exit, and how the cabin feels to you. Those observations are more useful than assuming that a convertible and a coupé feel identical in everyday use.
The shared engineering
Hybrid power, with a McLaren focus
The current Artura formula combines a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 and an electric motor, with 700 PS in the manufacturer’s specification. The electric motor contributes to response as well as allowing short electric-only journeys when conditions permit.
McLaren’s UK technical release lists 0–62 mph in 3.0 seconds for both body styles. The carbon-fibre lightweight architecture provides the structural foundation; McLaren says removing the fixed roof does not require additional strengthening to retain its rigidity.
The Spider is listed as 62 kg heavier than the contemporary Coupé, principally because of the roof mechanism. That is a useful technical distinction, but your preferred body style need not be decided by one weight figure.

A useful comparison
Try the details that matter to you
Seat choice, cabin materials and the way you use luggage space deserve attention alongside the roof. Check the driving position and the mode controls, then talk through the options on the exact vehicle rather than working from a photograph of another specification.
For a touring car, bring a realistic bag to your appointment and ask about the charging routine for your journeys. A plug-in hybrid supercar is still a car you will pack, park and use, and those everyday details help you make a confident choice.
