McLaren 750S: Coupe or Spider?

A sculpted fixed roof or open-air engagement: choose the 750S around the drives you most look forward to.

Two ways to enjoy the 750S

Choose the 750S Coupe for a permanently enclosed cockpit and the sweep of its fixed roofline. Choose the 750S Spider when open-air driving is part of what makes a supercar special to you.

Both belong to McLaren’s 750S range. The Spider adds the option of opening the cabin to the elements, making the roof decision as much about the journeys you look forward to as the silhouette you prefer.

The Spider’s Retractable Hard Top

McLaren calls the Spider’s roof the Retractable Hard Top (RHT). The manufacturer specifies an opening or closing time of 11 seconds, at speeds of up to 50km/h (31mph), subject to the operating instructions and suitable conditions.

Ask your specialist to demonstrate it while you are stationary. Experience the cabin with the roof raised and lowered, and check the operation and roof specification fitted to the particular Spider you are considering.

Make the cockpit part of the choice

A good seating position starts with reach, support and a clear view ahead. Settle into the actual seat specification, then check pedal reach and steering-wheel position before exploring the controls.

The New Forest 750S Spider pictured below has carbon racing seats. Other cars can have different seats, materials and options, so use the photographs to start your specification conversation.

Small details, personal preferences

Seat shape and the position of the centre console are details you will notice on every drive. Check how easily you settle into the seat, fasten the belt and reach the controls without shifting away from your preferred position.

Plan for a weekend away

Bring your regular overnight bags to an appointment. McLaren lists 150 litres of front luggage capacity for the 750S Spider; the opening, bag shape and loading instructions still matter as much as the headline volume.

Ask the specialist to show you the storage areas and explain the restrictions around the roof mechanism. If you expect to travel with the roof down, check your luggage in that configuration.

Check your arrival as well as your drive

The 750S’s upward-opening doors are part of its character. Measure your garage entrance and parking space, then check the room needed to open the doors and step into the cockpit.

Bring a regular passenger along, too. Comparing entry, seating position and the view out together can make the final choice much clearer.
