Range Rover: electric or hybrid?
Range Rover now offers fully electric and plug-in hybrid choices. Start with how you would charge, then compare the powertrain and specification that suit your journeys.
The story in brief
- Fully electric: Range Rover quotes up to 372 miles of estimated WLTP range.
- Plug-in hybrid: P460e and P550e combine a petrol engine with electric power; quoted electric range is up to 74 miles.
- Local support: discuss current Range Rover models, charging and availability with Land Rover Hatfield.
Choose the charging routine
The first question is where you would plug in
Both choices can use externally charged electric power. Range Rover Electric relies entirely on its battery; the plug-in hybrid also has a petrol engine for journeys beyond its electric driving range.
If you have convenient charging at home or work, explain your regular journeys to the Hatfield team. Include the longer trips you make occasionally, not just the daily mileage.
You can begin with Range Rover at Grange and current Land Rover and Range Rover offers. The final comparison should use the exact vehicle and specification you are considering.
Two electrified routes
What the powertrains mean for your journeys
Range Rover Electric
- Powertrain
- Fully electric, twin motors
- Electric range
- Up to 372 miles, manufacturer estimated WLTP
- Quoted maximum output
- 550 PS / 850 Nm
- Charging example
- 10–80% in 22 minutes using a 350 kW DC charger
- Longer journeys
- Plan suitable charging stops
Range Rover plug-in hybrid
- Powertrain
- 3.0-litre petrol engine plus 160 kW electric motor
- Versions
- P460e and P550e
- Electric range
- Up to 74 miles WLTP, specification dependent
- Charging example
- 0–100% in as little as five hours using 7 kW AC
- Longer journeys
- Petrol capability complements battery-powered driving
The hybrid figure is electric-only range; it is not the car’s total petrol-and-electric range. Manufacturer charging times depend on the charger, battery and conditions. WLTP figures are for comparison. Actual range depends on temperature, driving style, speed, load and vehicle specification.
Fully electric capability
Understand the range and charging figures
Range Rover’s UK Electric page quotes 22 minutes for a 10–80% charge using a 350 kW DC charger. For a full charge on AC, it gives seven hours using 22 kW and 19 hours using 7 kW.
Those are different charging situations. A high-power public charger is useful during a trip; the time at home depends on the supply and charging equipment available at your property.
The Electric model also has a quoted towing capacity up to 2,500 kg and a battery warranty of eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Confirm the vehicle’s limits and full warranty terms with the team.
The plug-in hybrid option
Electric driving with a petrol engine alongside
The P460e and P550e use a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine with a 160 kW electric motor. Range Rover’s UK information quotes electric range up to 74 miles and explains the charging route for the plug-in hybrid.
Regular charging is what lets you make use of its electric capability. Consider whether you can plug in conveniently between journeys, and discuss how the petrol engine and electric modes work together.
When comparing specifications, ask about the seating configuration, wheel choice and equipment on the exact version. A Range Rover range-wide feature is not necessarily fitted to every powertrain and body combination.
Your own requirements
Bring the questions that matter to you
The right comparison includes passenger access, your preferred driving position, luggage and your charging routine. Make those part of the appointment alongside the specification sheet.
- Charging access. Explain your parking and whether you can install or use a charger.
- Typical and longer trips. Bring examples so charging and petrol capability can be discussed in context.
- Passengers and luggage. Confirm the seating layout and usable space of the exact car.
- Towing needs. Ask for the limits and equipment appropriate to the vehicle you choose.
