Discovery: ready for your trailer?
A family caravan, horsebox or boat trailer asks more of a car than a luggage-only journey. Discovery’s towing capability is a strong starting point—but the right match is always vehicle-specific.
At a glance
- Up to 3,500kg: Discovery’s published maximum towing capability; check the exact vehicle and combination limits.
- Trailer Stability Assist: listed in the current UK Discovery equipment.
- Advanced Tow Assist: reversing support to discuss as part of the exact vehicle specification, not an assumption on every car.
Start with your trailer—not just the headline
Land Rover publishes up to 3,500kg of towing capability for the current UK Discovery. Its seven-seat layout also makes it worth considering when passengers and leisure equipment need to travel together.
For your own shortlist, bring the trailer’s identification details and intended loaded weight. A caravan ready for a holiday or a horsebox carrying animals and equipment is not the same as an empty trailer.
Ask the team to check the specific Discovery, its towing equipment and its permitted vehicle and train weights. A maximum towing figure is not permission to add the heaviest trailer to a fully loaded car without checking the complete combination.

Three checks before you choose
Vehicle and trailer weights
Check the handbook and vehicle plate, the trailer limits and the load you plan to carry. Passengers and luggage are part of the car’s load. Keep within all relevant limits, not just the advertised towing maximum.
Towbar and connections
Confirm that the towbar and towing electrics are compatible with the exact vehicle and trailer. Ask about the permitted nose weight and the components included in the quotation; do not borrow a figure from another Land Rover model.
Your driving entitlement
Check your driving-licence entitlement and the official rules for the combination. GOV.UK explains maximum authorised mass and vehicle-and-trailer limits; these are separate from whether the car has enough engine performance.
What does the assistance technology add?
Trailer Stability Assist appears in the current UK Discovery specification. It is part of the vehicle’s towing-support equipment, not a replacement for a properly matched, correctly loaded trailer.
Land Rover also promotes Advanced Tow Assist for help with the trailer’s direction when reversing. Its guidance describes a display of the current and desired trajectory to help you guide the manoeuvre.
Treat Advanced Tow Assist as a specification question when comparing cars. Confirm that the function and necessary equipment are included on the individual Discovery, then ask for a demonstration. A towing-capacity headline or the presence of a screen alone does not establish that the feature is fitted.
The UK Discovery iGuide says Advanced Tow Assist requires a trailer profile and calibration. When the system is operating, the driver still controls speed and braking. Ask the team to demonstrate the equipment fitted to the car you are considering.

Seven seats change the loading conversation
Discovery’s passenger flexibility can be valuable for family trips, but the passengers, bags and towing setup must be considered together. Work out who will travel and what stays in the car before deciding that the combination meets your needs.
GOV.UK defines gross train weight as the fully loaded car and fully loaded trailer together. It must not be exceeded. The vehicle’s plate and handbook are the starting points—not a calculation based only on engine output.
This guide concerns the full-size Discovery. Discovery Sport is a different vehicle; do not assume it shares Discovery’s towing maximum or equipment specification.
Make your Grange enquiry useful
Bring the trailer make and model, its plated weights, the expected load, your usual passenger count and details of where you manoeuvre it. A narrow driveway or storage entrance may make reversing assistance particularly relevant to your decision.
Ask Grange’s Land Rover team to discuss the current Discovery specification, suitable towing equipment and availability. If you are considering a registered vehicle, check what is actually fitted rather than relying on the model’s general brochure.
You can explore current Land Rover offers first, then request a quotation for the Discovery and equipment that suit your plans. For legal weight and licence guidance, use GOV.UK’s towing limits and driving-entitlement guidance.
Your questions answered
How much can the current UK Discovery tow?
Land Rover publishes up to 3,500kg for Discovery. Check the exact vehicle, trailer, towbar and permitted loaded combination before deciding whether your trailer is suitable.
Is Advanced Tow Assist standard on every Discovery?
Do not assume so. Land Rover promotes the function, but it must be confirmed on the exact car and equipment specification you are considering.
Does the UK specification include Trailer Stability Assist?
Yes. Trailer Stability Assist is listed in the current UK Discovery equipment. Correct trailer matching and loading remain essential.
Can I use all seven seats while towing?
Plan for the passengers and luggage as part of the vehicle load, then check vehicle, axle, trailer and gross train limits for the actual combination. Seven seats and a towing maximum are not an unrestricted combined payload allowance.
Does this apply to Discovery Sport?
No. Discovery Sport is a different model with its own towing ratings and specifications. Ask for the information for the exact vehicle you intend to buy.
