Grenadier: which differential locks?
A purposeful drivetrain deserves a considered specification. Understand the locks fitted to your Grenadier before choosing the equipment for your next journey.
Three locks, two different jobs
Every current UK Grenadier Station Wagon starts with permanent four-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer case and a Centre Differential Lock. The front and rear axle locks are additional equipment: they are included in the UK Trialmaster Edition specification.
The centre lock controls the connection between the front and rear axles. The axle locks act across the wheels of their respective axles, helping maintain drive when grip becomes uneven. They are distinct parts of the specification, rather than three names for the same feature.
Start with the terrain, then choose the edition
For a Grenadier that will mainly travel on the road, begin with the standard drivetrain and the cabin specification you want. Front and rear locks are an off-road equipment decision, rather than a feature to select simply for everyday driving.
If your plans include challenging tracks and ground where individual wheels can lose grip, discuss the additional axle locks with Grange. Explain the terrain, frequency of use and experience you have, so the team can help you assess the appropriate build.
Trialmaster includes the front and rear locks
INEOS’s current UK page lists front and rear differential locks in the Trialmaster Edition’s additional equipment. Other editions and individual cars need a separate specification check; a name, colour or set of wheels will not establish which locks are fitted.
Ask for the front and rear locks to be identified explicitly on your quotation or the car’s build specification. This matters particularly when comparing new and pre-owned Grenadiers across different model years.
Make the controls part of your handover
The centre lock is operated through the transfer-case lever. When fitted, the front and rear locks have separate overhead controls. Ask your specialist to explain the indications, engagement conditions and disengagement procedure using the handbook for your exact car.
A practical explanation of the controls is more useful than a list of switches. Discuss suitable off-road instruction before using unfamiliar equipment, and follow the handbook’s operating restrictions.
Consider the complete off-road specification
Differential locks are one part of a considered specification. Tyres, the route, ground conditions and the driver’s preparation all matter; a lock does not make an unsuitable route suitable.
Ask the team to explain the recovery points and any recovery equipment on the individual vehicle as part of your handover. Confirm the equipment you need before planning a trip.
Specify your Grenadier with Grange
Tell our INEOS Grenadier team where you intend to drive. We can help you compare current Station Wagon builds, confirm the locks fitted and plan a thorough introduction to the vehicle.
