Chevrolet Silverado towing in the UK
A headline towing limit is only the first number. This guide explains the current GMSV UK Silverado figures and the vehicle, coupling, payload, trailer and driving-licence checks that must agree before towing.
At a glance
- Silverado 1500: current V8 variants are listed with 4,200kg or 4,500kg maximum trailer mass.
- Silverado 2500 HD: published limits are higher, but the vehicle, trailer and driver entitlement must all be appropriate.
- No shortcut: passengers, cargo, accessories and nose weight count against vehicle limits; confirm the exact VIN plate and coupling.
Begin with the exact Silverado
GMSV UK lists three Silverado 1500 equipment lines: LT Trail Boss, ZR2 and High Country. Their dimensions are close, but their payload, gross combined weight rating and maximum trailer mass are not identical.
The Silverado 2500 HD is a separate heavy-duty model. Do not transfer a 2500 figure to a 1500—or a figure for another engine, axle or market—to plan a UK combination.
Silverado 1500 V8 figures published for the UK
- LT Trail Boss
- 4,200kg trailer; 422kg nose; 752kg payload; 6,804kg GCWR
- ZR2
- 4,200kg trailer; 400kg nose; 713kg payload; 6,851kg GCWR
- High Country
- 4,500kg trailer; 422kg nose; 748kg payload; 7,160kg GCWR
- Powertrain in these figures
- 6.2-litre V8, 420hp, 460lb-ft, 10-speed automatic
- Body size
- 5,914mm long; 2,065mm body width
- Source date

These are source figures for the listed 6.2-litre V8 variants, not permission to tow that weight on every journey. Confirm the individual vehicle plate, coupling, trailer, load and licence entitlement.
Payload and nose weight use the same allowance
Towball or nose weight is carried by the vehicle. Add passengers, luggage, accessories and anything placed in the load bed, then check the remaining payload on the specific truck.
A trailer may be below its maximum mass while the truck is already overloaded. Weighing the loaded combination is more reliable than estimating every item.
GCWR is the whole combination
Gross combined weight rating is the permitted maximum for the loaded truck and loaded trailer together. It does not replace the separate vehicle, axle, payload, trailer or coupling limits—every applicable limit still has to be met.
High Country’s published 4,500kg trailer figure is paired with a 7,160kg GCWR. A truck loaded close to its own maximum may therefore leave less capacity for the trailer than the headline suggests.
Your driving licence may be the limiting factor
For licences issued from 1 January 1997, standard category BE generally covers a trailer with a maximum authorised mass up to 3,500kg. Heavier trailer MAM can require different entitlement, such as C1E, depending on the combination.
That matters because some published Silverado towing figures exceed 3,500kg. Check the categories and restriction codes on the actual driver’s licence against current DVLA guidance before committing to a trailer.
Silverado 2500 HD needs its own calculation
GMSV’s technical data lists conventional trailering up to 7,257kg for the petrol 2500 HD and up to 9,072kg for a Duramax version with the Max Trailering Package. Those figures sit in a different legal and operational context from a 1500 pickup.
A heavier combination can change licence, speed, operating, tachograph or operator-licensing considerations according to use. Take professional legal advice for the intended private or business operation; do not rely on a model-page maximum alone.
Equipment helps; it does not rewrite physics
The Silverado 1500 range lists a 13.4-inch infotainment display, 12.3-inch driver display and rear-view camera equipment. GMSV also identifies trailering and off-road hardware by equipment line.
Camera views and driver assistance can help positioning, but the driver remains responsible for clearance, loading, mirrors, braking distance and the trailer’s behaviour. Ask for a demonstration with the exact specification.
The safe towing order
Identify the exact truck and its plate, record the trailer MAM and actual loaded mass, add payload and nose weight, check every axle/coupling/GCWR limit, then confirm the driver’s licence and insurance. Use the lowest applicable limit—not the largest number in a brochure.
Questions answered
Can a Silverado 1500 tow 4,500kg in the UK?
GMSV lists 4,500kg for the current High Country V8, but the individual truck, coupling, payload, GCWR, trailer and driver entitlement must all permit the actual combination.
Does a standard car licence cover a 4,500kg trailer?
Do not assume it does. GOV.UK states category BE entitlement generally covers a trailer MAM up to 3,500kg for licences issued from 1 January 1997. Check the actual licence and current DVLA rules.
Why does payload matter when towing?
Passengers, cargo, accessories and towball load are carried by the truck. They can use the available payload and affect axle and combined limits.
