After releasing the first pictures of the new Corsa GSi in March, Vauxhall have now confirmed its powertrain and performance stats. This is ahead of order books opening in July, and the first cars arriving in UK showrooms later this autumn. Built on a Corsa VXR chassis, the new GSi is powered by a punchy 1.4-litre turbo engine with 150PS and 220Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0-62 mph takes just 8.9 seconds, with strong performance right through to its maximum speed of 128mph. An ample 220Nm of torque between 3,000 to 4,500rpm, allied to a short-ratio six-speed gearbox, also helps the GSi accelerate from 50-70mph in fifth gear in just 9.9 seconds. In addition to delivering high performance, the Corsa GSi is also part of Vauxhall's latest Euro 6d-TEMP rollout with fuel economy figures of 47.1mpg combined, CO2 emissions from 139g/km. And of course, that performance is matched by sharp design both inside and out. Large front air intakes, a sculptured bonnet and prominent rear spoiler set the GSi apart from other Corsa models.
The new rules for the MOT have now come into place. Here are the categories that the inspector will be using. Firstly, is Dangerous - "a direct and immediate risk to road safety or that has a serious impact on the environment. Do not drive the vehicle until it's been repaired." This will be a Fail. Also a fail, is something deemed as Major as it "may affect the vehicle's safety, put other road users at risk or have an impact on the environment. Repair it immediately." Those that will pass are Minor faults that have "no significant effect on the safety of the vehicle or impact on the environment. Repair as soon as possible." And anything that is an Advisory, something that "could become more serious in the future. Monitor and repair it if necessary." What we are all aiming for of course is a Pass. That means that the vehicle "meets the minimum legal standard. Make sure it continues to meet the standard."
Founded in 1960 the Kumho Tire Company based in Seoul, South Korea, is one of the world's leading tyre manufacturers, with revenues in excess of two billion Euro. Each year it sells over 60 million tyres worldwide. Their new ECOWING ES31 tyre has been designed specifically to keep its level of rolling resistance to a minimum. It is so effective that almost 70 percent of the 38 sizes currently offered carry a related B label grade - an impressively high margin by any standard. Other bonuses of the newcomer's innovative asymmetric design include four wide drainage channels for optimum wet weather performance and aerodynamically designed shoulders for improved wind resistance that feature novel heat dissipation dimples on the inner flank. There is a wide range of sizes to fit the vast majority of small and medium hatchbacks, saloons and estates.
GDPR based changes announced by the DVLA this month, mean that over 2 million drivers will be required to grant new driving licence data permission to their fleet operator. Only by complying with the new rules, which come into effect 25th August 2018, will fleet drivers be properly checked. Kevin Curtis, Technical Director of the Association for Driving Licence Verification (ADLV) commented, "This is a huge shift for the DVLA and indeed the driving licence checking industry as a whole. From a technical and compliance perspective, all employers and third parties who are responsible for licence checking will need to be able to demonstrate that the new fair processing declaration has been signed by the driver." Employers and fleet managers, who are legally obliged to check a drivers' entitlement to drive, will be under enormous pressure to hit the August deadline. But, this is good news for ADLV members as they are all ISO27001 accredited.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive has given his response to the latest SMMT car sales figures. "March's decline is not unexpected given the huge surge in registrations in the same month last year. Despite this, the market itself is relatively high with the underlying factors in terms of consumer choice, finance availability and cost of ownership all highly competitive. "Consumer and business confidence, however, has taken a knock in recent months and a thriving new car market is essential to the overall health of our economy. This means creating the right economic conditions for all types of consumers to have the confidence to buy new vehicles. All technologies, regardless of fuel type, have a role to play in helping improve air quality whilst meeting our climate change targets, so government must do more to encourage consumers to buy new vehicles rather than hang onto their older, more polluting vehicles."
