For Formula 1, 1980 was a watershed moment in Grand Prix history. It's that year which Mark Hughes, the Grand Prix Editor of Motor Sport magazine turns the spotlight on, in the much-anticipated second book in his F1 Retro series. With his typically in-depth style, Hughes looks at this defining season from multiple perspectives. He chronicles Bernie Ecclestone's conflict with the traditional sporting authority of governing body FISA as well as the battle for technical supremacy on the track. This was a gloves-off fight between independent teams such as Brabham and Williams and manufacturers such as Renault and Ferrari. In the 280 pages of F1 Retro 1980, Hughes vividly evokes the era from sporting, political and historical viewpoints, including contributions from those who were there, to produce a book that is rich in anecdote and insight. There's a race-by-race analysis, plus fascinating technical details on all of the cars. Hughes even presents a 21st-century CFD breakdown of Alan Jones' championship-winning Williams FW07. It's a must for all motor sport enthusiasts. F1 RETRO 1980 by Mark Hughes is out now. Hardback, RRP: £60.00. ISBN: 978-1999748104. Published by Motor Sport Magazine.
